Bingo has always been a popular game. It is easy to play, usually only costs a small amount per ticket, and gives everybody the opportunity to be able to win decent sums of money in exchange for a little luck. The game itself seems to have been around forever and it’s certainly possible to trace its roots back to the 16th century, even though the term Bingo wasn’t coined until the 1920s in the USA.
There are over 1.4 million bingo card combinations but it was mathematician Carl Leffler who first gave the game mass appeal by devising over 10,000 car combinations before going crazy allegedly because of the strain of coming up with so many unique combinations of numbers. Leffler was employed by Edwin Lowe who also gave the game the name of Bingo rather than Beano as it was called.
The game of bingo is played throughout the world. It is believed to have been first developed in Italy, was popularised in France, and was introduced in Germany as a means to help teach multiplication and number tables. It has been a stalwart of church fundraising events and is now one of the largest online gambling industries in the world.
